Definition

We feel generous when we want to share our resources, time, or care without tracking what we'll get back.

Giving without expectation deepens relationships. It also signals to others that we're trustworthy. Generosity activates our brain's chemical reward systems, so acts of generosity tend to make the giver feel great, too.

Good Ideas
  • Give without attaching a receipt to it
  • Notice when generosity feels good versus obligatory
  • Let others receive without minimizing the gift
  • Extend it toward yourself too
  • Set limits so generosity doesn't become depletion
Bad Ideas
  • Use it to manage how others see you
  • Give until resentment builds, then wonder why
  • Mistake generosity for having no limits
  • Keep a mental ledger while claiming to give freely
  • Weaponize it later — "after all I've done"
